Community Garden at Ajani (Templestowe Lower)

Community gardens are a great contribution to both improving food security and raising awareness about nutrition and food safety.

Garden volunteers can participate in the Earthcraft Gardening and Horticulture course.

Cabbage Moth Decoys are available for sale from the @ The Ajani Hub Cafe.
The Cabbage Moth Butterfly (Pieris rapae) is very territorial and these decoys will act as a deterrent to female egg laying butterflies. Left unchecked, eggs from the Cabbage Moth Butterfly will hatch on the leaf undersides of your plants and the larvae - the caterpillars will eat your plant leaves for sustenance.

The decoys are made from tough material that is 100% waterproof and tear proof. They have the colours and markings of a real Cabbage White Butterfly. A stretchy elastic is also used to increase the movement of the decoy once its attached to a stake.

How it works - The Cabbage White Butterfly will not lay eggs where other butterflies live. The decoys have two key features for success:
1. They include the black marking of the female (two spots/upper wing vs the male with only 1 spot / upper wing).
2. They are also slightly bigger than the real thing. The wingspan of the adult is about 3-5cm, so making the decoy about 5cm works well.

Instructions - Attach the stretchy elastic to a short stake or stick so the decoys move about in the wind and are close to your plants.

Place two decoys in each section of the garden as Cabbage White Butterfly's live in pairs and you do not want single butterflies moving in!
