Chiltern - Old Chiltern Police Lockup

The Old Chiltern Police Lockup was built in 1874, replacing earlier iron and timber huts which provided little protection from Chiltern's summer heat or cold winter conditions.

The small building contains two cells which illustrate the harsh conditions experienced by people imprisoned during the nineteenth century. Interpretive panels explain how the lockup was used and recount stories about some of its former occupants. An audio presentation provides additional information.

Visitors need to collect the key before entering. The key can be borrowed from the Chiltern Visitor Information Centre or the neighbouring Chiltern Post Office during their opening hours. Return the key after visiting.
