Chiltern - Lake View House

Lake View House is a National Trust property furnished in period style to recreate a lakeside country villa in a prosperous nineteenth-century mining town.

The red-brick house was built in 1870 and became the home of Ethel Florence Richardson and her family in 1876. Richardson later became known by her pen name Henry Handel Richardson and wrote The Getting of Wisdom and The Fortunes of Richard Mahony.

Richardson described the house and her childhood in Chiltern, which she called Barambogie, in The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. The collection includes personal items associated with Richardson, including the desk on which she wrote her first novel.

Visitors can explore the period-furnished rooms and learn about Richardson, her family and life in Chiltern during the gold-mining era.
