Camperdown - Mount Sugarloaf Summit Walk

The 2km return Mount Sugarloaf Summit Walk is a short but rewarding hike to the summit of one of the volcanic cones within the Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf Reserves. Although the climb is steep in places, walkers are rewarded with magnificent panoramic views across Camperdown, the Volcanic Lakes and Plains, Mount Elephant, Lake Purrumbete and, on a clear day, the distant Grampians.

The walk begins near the Mount Leura Lookout and follows well-maintained tracks through native bushland to the saddle between the two volcanic cones before climbing to the summit of Mount Sugarloaf. Along the way, interpretive signs explain the area's volcanic history, revegetation projects and local wildlife. Keep an eye out for birds of prey, wallabies and a variety of native wildflowers that flourish throughout the reserve.

Mount Sugarloaf is a scoria cone that formed thousands of years ago during a series of volcanic eruptions that created the Leura Maar volcanic complex. The summit provides a different perspective to nearby Mount Leura, making it well worth combining both walks into a single visit.

After reaching the summit, walkers simply return via the same track or continue onto the reserve's network of interconnected walking trails, including the Panorama Circuit.
