Briagolong - Freestone Creek Walking Track

Enjoy stunning views and rocky outcrops along this 6.5 km loop.

Starting from the Blue Pool Day Visitor Area carpark, this track begins with a short climb north along Freestone Creek to a lookout offering views down to Blue Pool below.

Continue north past Froam Campground and cross the Freestone Creek Road at Gladstone Creek, the site of a former mining settlement that burned down on Christmas Eve in 1868.

The track then follows a contouring route above the road, before dropping back down and following the 4WD access road to Freestone Creek at McKinnons Point. Rest your feet at one of the picnic tables and take in stunning views of the cliff face before crossing the creek and continuing along McKinnons Point Track.

After about 500 m, the track veers off to the left onto Ridge Track. This pleasant section follows a shady gully showcasing an array of plant species that differ from other sections of the walk. The track then climbs up to Peregrine Lookout, offering views of Freestone Creek. As the name suggests, Peregrine falcons may be seen from here during breeding season (September to December).

The track winds its way through dry open forest comprising Red Box, Stringybark and Ironbark, passing an old mine and chimney ruin before descending to a final crossing of the Freestone Creek. Here you can cool off with a quick dip and enjoy views of Blue Pool and the surrounding geology.

The walk has occasional steps, short steep hills, formed track, some obstacles and limited signage. Bushwalking experience recommended.

Note: This walking track crosses the Freestone Creek at two spots. Walkers should wear appropriate footwear and prepare to get their feet wet.
