Bowden Spur Mountain Bike Area (Kinglake Central)

If you're a thrill seeker looking for challenging mountain bike trails near Melbourne, action-packed Shepherds Track downhill mountain bike ride in the Bowden Spur Mountain Bike Area will satisfy your sense of adventure.

Fly down the trail as you leap over dirt jumps, wind your way along large off-camber sections and cross over rocky terrain. The trail descends 230m along a 2km stretch of the Spur, creating an exhilarating MTB experience at Kinglake. With dirt jumps, rock gardens, flowing earth berms and off-camber riding, there's excitement at every twist and turn.

Shepherds Track is not for the faint-hearted. The trail navigates very challenging terrain, steep gradients and frequent obstacles, earning it the extremely difficult rating of Double Black Diamond. The trail is best tackled by experienced mountain bike riders.

The trail is suitable for Downhill/Enduro bikes only. Trail bikes are not permitted. Full face helmets and body armour should be worn at all times.

To maximise your riding time, it is possible to shuttle along the road by car. Otherwise it's about a 15-20 minute walk up the steep, winding and dusty unsealed Bowden Spur Road.

Bowden Spur Mountain Bike Area is located on Bowden Spur Road, approximately 200m from the intersection of Kinglake-Whittlesea Road in Kinglake Central.

There is a parking area with toilets and an information sign.

There are two other trails.

KL230 is a 2250m long trail rated as Black Diamond (very difficult, suited to experienced riders, challenging terrain and frequent obstacles). The downhill trail offers a different experience to Shepherds, as it twists and turns through the forest before finishing with a long side cut section.

Throme Room is a 1500m long trail rated as Blue (more difficult, suitable for riders with some off-road experience. Variety of terrain, including obstacles and some steep sections). It is a fun filled gravity loop trail, with rollers, berms and jumps to keep the skills topped up.
