Blackwood Mineral Springs - Shaws Lake - Sweets Lookout Walk
This enjoyable circuit combines peaceful bushland, gold rush history and attractive views over the Lerderderg Valley. Beginning near the Blackwood Mineral Springs Caravan Park, the walk follows well-formed tracks through the historic Blackwood goldfields to picturesque Shaws Lake before returning via Sweets Lookout.
The walk starts beside the Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve, where you can sample naturally carbonated mineral water before crossing the footbridge over the Lerderderg River. From here the track climbs gently through open forest, passing remnants of old water races, mining cuttings and other relics that reflect the area's rich gold mining history.
Shaws Lake is a tranquil spot surrounded by native bush and provides an excellent place to stop for a rest. Once a popular swimming destination for locals, it is now a peaceful picnic area with tables and information signs. The return journey passes through Sweets Lookout, where a short detour rewards walkers with views across the surrounding forested hills before descending back to the mineral springs.
The walk is approximately 3.5 km return and takes 1½ to 2 hours. It follows well-maintained tracks with a few moderate climbs, making it suitable for most walkers with a reasonable level of fitness.

Route description
- Start at the Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve near the caravan park.
- Cross the footbridge over the Lerderderg River and visit the mineral spring on the opposite bank.
- Climb the stone steps immediately after the bridge.
- Turn right onto Moonlight Gully Circuit Track and follow the river through open forest.
- At the junction signed "Lookout", turn left and climb steadily to Sweets Lookout.
- Continue to Shaws Lake Track.
- Follow the track to Shaws Lake, where there are picnic tables and a shelter.
- From the lake, follow Moonlight Gully Circuit Track back towards the Mineral Springs Reserve.
- Cross the footbridge to return to the car park.
