Black Flat Walk (Warrandyte)

The 4km Black Flat Walk explores one of the quieter sections of Warrandyte State Park, following the floodplain and bushland beside the Yarra River. Beginning from Warrandyte State Park (Black Flat Picnic Area), the walk meanders through open woodland, river flats and historic gold-mining country, offering a peaceful escape just 30 km from Melbourne.
This area is much less visited than Pound Bend or Jumping Creek, making it ideal for those seeking a tranquil bushwalk with excellent opportunities to spot kangaroos, birdlife and spring wildflowers.
Start from the Black Flat Picnic Area which has picnic tables and follow the walking track through open eucalypt forest towards the Yarra River. The trail passes through gentle bushland where evidence of Warrandyte's gold-mining history can still be found among the trees.
The river flats are lined with large river red gums and provide attractive places to pause and enjoy the scenery. Listen for kookaburras, rosellas and honeyeaters, while lucky walkers may also spot water dragons basking on rocks near the river.
The track is mostly gentle with a few uneven sections caused by tree roots and natural erosion. Return via the same route to the picnic area.
