Benambra - Taylor's Crossing Camping Area

Taylor's Crossing Camping Area is a small, remote bush campground beside the Mitta Mitta River in the Alpine National Park. It offers a peaceful High Country setting for self-sufficient campers, fishing, swimming and exploring the surrounding four-wheel-drive tracks.

A narrow pedestrian suspension bridge crosses the Mitta Mitta River near the campground. The Australian Alps Walking Track also passes through Taylor's Crossing on its 650 km route between Walhalla and the Australian Capital Territory.

Access:

Taylor's Crossing is in a remote section of the Alpine National Park north of Benambra. Access is generally from the Benambra-Corryong Road and surrounding unsealed park tracks.

Vehicle access to the camping area may require crossing the Mitta Mitta River. The crossing can be long, deep, fast-flowing or impassable following rain and snowmelt. It should only be attempted by experienced drivers in a suitably equipped four-wheel-drive vehicle when conditions are safe. Never drive through floodwater.

Mountain roads and tracks in this area can be narrow, steep, loose and winding. Most camping areas are not accessible during winter, and seasonal or emergency closures may apply. Check road, track and river conditions before travelling.

The remote location and difficult access make this campground unsuitable for conventional vehicles, large caravans and inexperienced drivers. Mobile telephone reception should not be relied upon.

Water Safety:

The Mitta Mitta River may have cold water, strong currents, slippery rocks, submerged objects, sudden drop-offs and rapidly changing water levels. There are no lifesaving services. Enter the water slowly, feet first, never dive or jump into unfamiliar water and closely supervise children.

A Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence may be required. Check current fishing regulations and the trout fishing season before fishing.

Campfires:

Use the fireplaces provided and observe all fire restrictions. Campfires must not be lit on Total Fire Ban days. Completely extinguish fires with water before leaving or going to sleep.

Opening Hours:

Open when the surrounding park roads and tracks are accessible. Check current conditions and closures before travelling.

Cost:

Free. No booking is required. Confirm current arrangements on the Parks Victoria dispersed camping page.

Access for Dogs:

Dogs and other pets are not permitted in the Alpine National Park. Assistance dogs are welcome subject to Parks Victoria's entry requirements.
