Beechworth - Lake Sambell

Beechworth - Lake Sambell

Lake Sambell is a picturesque recreation reserve and a popular venue for water and boating activities. It is located only a short stroll from the centre of Beechworth.

It was originally the site of the Rocky Mountain Mining Company, an open cut sluice operation during the mid 1800s and the early 1900s, during the town?s gold rush era. In the 1920s the area was created into a recreational lake and reserve for the residents and visitors of Beechworth.

There are walking trails throughout the reserve, picnic facilities, a children's playground and designated swimming areas.

The Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail passes through the reserve with the lake providing an ideal resting spot.

Water Activities
Lake Sambell is a popular and safe spot for swimming and kayaking. The main swimming areas are the sandy beach near the playground (northwest shore) and the small jetty (southwest shore).

The water is tested monthly. If there are any issues with water quality, there will be signage erected. The Indigo Shire Council Facebook page will also have updates.

The lake is popular for kayaking and non-motorized water activities.

Fishing
The lake is stocked with trout, redfin, and yellow belly.

Walking
A 2.0 km walking trail surrounds the lake.
