Beechworth Chinese Gardens

Beechworth Chinese Gardens are peaceful landscaped gardens created to recognise and celebrate the important contribution of the Chinese community to Beechworth and the surrounding goldfields.

Thousands of Chinese miners came to the Beechworth district during the gold rush of the 1850s. Despite discrimination and restrictions placed upon them at the time, the Chinese community made an important contribution to the development and history of the district.

The gardens have been designed using Feng Shui principles to create a harmonious and tranquil setting. Features include a series of ponds, extensive plantings, lawns, paths and quiet places where visitors can sit and enjoy the surroundings.

Visitors can wander through the gardens, cross the small bridges and relax beside the ponds. The gardens provide an attractive place for a short stroll or picnic and are located close to Lake Sambell.

The Chinese Gardens also provide a good starting point for exploring more of Beechworth's Chinese heritage, which includes the Chinese section and historic Chinese Burning Towers at Beechworth Cemetery.
