Beechworth - Butt Butt Tree

The Butt Butt Tree is a remarkable old Apple Box tree tucked away in a quiet part of Beechworth and recognised by the National Trust of Australia as a significant tree.

Known officially on the National Trust Significant Tree Register as the Apple Box, But But, the tree is approximately 300 years old. Its botanical name is Eucalyptus bridgesiana.

The tree is particularly impressive because of its enormous and unusually shaped trunk. The National Trust records the tree as approximately 23 metres high with a trunk diameter of about two metres.

The trunk has extensive gall formations and a large central cavity. Historical information suggests that the unusual tree may actually be the union of two trees. Over the years steel spikes and horseshoes were nailed into the trunk and were eventually enveloped by the developing gall tissue.

The tree suffered severe storm damage in 1991 and several branches had to be removed.

The National Trust recognises the Butt Butt Tree for its great age, outstanding size, scientific importance, contribution to the local landscape and its historic and aesthetic significance.
