Batesford - Dog Rocks Reserve

Dog Rocks Reserve is a 15.75-hectare conservation reserve protecting a striking group of Devonian granite boulders on the otherwise flat plains near Batesford. Some of the formations resemble reclining dogs, which gave the reserve its name.

The land was donated to Trust for Nature to protect its geological, cultural, historical and landscape values. The granite outcrops and areas of remnant native grassland provide habitat for Cunningham’s skinks. Eastern grey kangaroos and nankeen kestrels may also be seen, along with spear grass, wallaby grass and kangaroo grass.

Marked walking trails lead through the reserve and around the granite formations. The open landscape and unusual boulders make the reserve particularly attractive for nature appreciation, landscape photography, sunsets and stargazing.

Visitors must remain on the marked trails, avoid crossing fence lines and stay off neighbouring private property. Sheep may be grazing inside the reserve, so close all gates after passing through them.

No toilets, drinking water, picnic tables or other amenities

Seasonal long grass and snakes may be present. Trust for Nature recommends wearing long trousers and gaiters when visiting during summer.

The entrance to this reserve is separate from the Dog Rocks attraction accessed from Dog Rocks Road.
