Ballarat Mechanics Institute Building Tours

Ballarat Mechanics Institute Building Tours

The Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute offers guided tours through its grand heritage building in the centre of Ballarat. Established in 1859, the institute has served as a library, reading room, lecture venue, museum and cultural centre for more than 160 years.

Day tours explore the colourful history of the institute and the people connected with it. Visitors may see the historic library, heritage rooms, Minerva Space, basements and other parts of the building, although access to every room cannot be guaranteed when performances or events are being held.

The institute also offers occasional night tours featuring stories of unusual events, mysteries and supernatural activity associated with the building. Special tours can be arranged for schools, clubs, tour groups and other organisations.

Day Tours:

Day tours generally depart at 2pm each Tuesday and take approximately 1–1.5 hours.

Tours are by appointment, with at least 24 hours’ notice required so that a volunteer guide can be arranged. Advance bookings are recommended.

Group tours may be arranged on other days.

Night Tours:

Night tours explore stories of the weird and supernatural associated with the historic building.

These tours have limited capacity and are offered on selected dates. Check the institute’s events calendar for upcoming sessions.
