Leigh Creek - Kryal Castle (Ballarat)
Kryal Castle is a medieval-themed adventure park and tourist attraction near Ballarat, approximately 120 km west of Melbourne. With its imposing castle walls, towers, knights, dragons and live entertainment, it offers families a chance to step into a world inspired by medieval history, legends and fantasy.
Visitors can explore the castle grounds, watch exciting jousting tournaments, see medieval combat demonstrations, wander through the maze, discover the Dragon's Labyrinth and participate in activities such as Knight School, archery and axe throwing.
The castle has attractions for a wide range of ages, from younger children enjoying the medieval-themed playground and magical characters to older children and adults exploring the darker side of medieval history in the Torture Museum.
There are live performances, demonstrations and activities throughout public opening days, with additional entertainment and special programs during school holidays and major events.

Championship Joust and Castle Arena - One of Kryal Castle's main attractions is the spectacular jousting tournament, where armoured knights on horseback compete in the Castle Arena. Cheer for your favourite knight as the competitors demonstrate their horsemanship and jousting skills. The joust is held on regular public opening days.
Skill at Arms and Ground Combat Displays - Watch medieval combat demonstrations featuring knights and re-enactors displaying fighting techniques, armour and weapons inspired by the Middle Ages.
Knight School - An interactive experience where children can learn about the skills and traditions of medieval knights and participate in activities under the guidance of castle characters. Knight School is included with general admission.
Axe Throwing - Test your accuracy with this supervised medieval-inspired activity. Axe throwing is included with general admission, subject to the activity's participation requirements.
Archery - Try your hand at shooting arrows towards targets under the guidance of the castle's archers. Archery is an additional-cost activity, and sessions are subject to availability.
Dragon's Labyrinth - Explore a fantasy world of dragons and medieval legends in this atmospheric walk-through attraction. Discover the story of the dragon Ushnagh and the magical world of Kryal Castle.
Dragon Garden - Explore a dragon-themed area of the castle grounds inspired by mythical creatures and fantasy.
The Maze - Challenge yourself to find a way through the castle's maze. An entertaining activity for children and adults who enjoy puzzles and exploration.
Medieval-Themed Playground - Children can enjoy a large playground inspired by the medieval castle setting, with opportunities for climbing and imaginative play.
Knight's Tower - Climb the tower stairs and enjoy elevated views across the castle grounds and surrounding landscape.
Knights' Table - Discover part of the castle's medieval world associated with its knights, their traditions and the legends of chivalry.
Wizard's Tower - Enter the world of medieval magic and fantasy, where wizard-themed displays and activities contribute to the castle's magical atmosphere.

Potions Classes - Join a hands-on potion-making experience and create magical concoctions in a fantasy-themed class. These sessions cost extra and may require advance booking. Children of all ages can participate, with parental assistance where needed.
Fairy Garden - Discover a magical garden area inspired by fairies and fantasy creatures.
Torture Museum - Explore an exhibition of historical torture devices and learn about some of the darker aspects of medieval history. The attraction contains disturbing material and is recommended for visitors aged 13 years and over.
Trebuchet - See one of the impressive siege engines associated with medieval warfare. A trebuchet was a powerful mechanical device used to launch projectiles during attacks on fortified castles.
Castle Blacksmith - Discover the traditional craft of blacksmithing and the important role blacksmiths played in making tools, equipment and other metal objects in medieval times. Demonstrations depend on the day's program.
Medieval Re-enactors - Meet costumed performers portraying characters from medieval life. Depending on the day's program, visitors may encounter knights, craftspeople and other historical characters throughout the castle.
Animal Pens - Visit the castle's resident animals and enjoy another aspect of life within the medieval-themed grounds.
Castle Chapel - Explore the castle's chapel, an atmospheric setting inspired by the important role religion played in medieval life. The chapel is also used for weddings and special occasions.
Tooth Fairy Lolly Shop - Visit the castle's sweet shop for a selection of lollies and ice cream. Opening times may vary.
Medieval Shops and Traders - Browse the castle's shops and stalls for themed merchandise, gifts and other items. The selection of traders and demonstrations varies.

The Abbey Tavern - Serves breakfast items, coffee and other refreshments on selected mornings.
Visitors are permitted to bring their own food and drinks into the castle grounds. Vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free options may be available at the food outlets.

Accessibility:
Kryal Castle provides wheelchair and pram access through the Traders Gates, located to the left of the main entrance staircase. Ask the ticketing staff for assistance when arriving.
Some areas have stairs, uneven ground or other limitations associated with the castle-style environment.
Visitors with disabilities may be eligible for a complimentary carer ticket when presenting the required documentation.
Access for Dogs:
Pets are not permitted because of the animals living at the castle. Contact the venue in advance regarding assistance animals.
How to Get There:
Kryal Castle is located approximately 15 minutes east of central Ballarat and 120 km west of Melbourne.
There is no direct public transport service to the castle. Visitors without a car can arrange a taxi or rideshare service from Ballarat.
Review:
From our perspective, Kryal Castle represents a really nice day out for the family, with the highlight being the jousting tournament. Watching the knights on horseback competing in the arena was an impressive experience, and the children particularly enjoyed the medieval atmosphere.
There are activities happening throughout the day, so pick up the entertainment schedule when you arrive and plan your visit accordingly. It is worth making sure you are at the arena in time for the joust, as this is one of the main highlights.
There is a Torture Museum within the castle, which is now recommended for ages 13 years and above. There is really no need for younger kids to go inside here since they already have a range of devices at their disposal to torture their parents, such as continual nagging and temper tantrums.
During our visit there was a 30-minute pantomime, which was quite fun. I think the noisy and uncomfortable chairs in the theatre could easily have been added to the Torture Museum as a modern addition. Performances and schedules have changed over time, so check the current entertainment program rather than expecting this particular show.
The places to buy food were fairly limited when we visited, but that wasn't a major issue because the food was good and reasonably priced. There are now several themed food outlets, and visitors can also bring their own food.
You don't necessarily go to Kryal Castle for a playground. However, the medieval-themed playground structure was very extensive and provided another enjoyable activity for the children.
Our kids enjoyed the archery the most. There was an additional charge for the activity, but it was a memorable part of the visit.
You should be able to spend most of the day here and have a thoroughly enjoyable time. On our visit, I wasn't convinced there were enough attractions to warrant a quick return visit, but the range of activities, performances and special events has continued to evolve.
