Balbirooroo Wetlands Walk (Balnarring)

Balbirooroo Wetlands Walk (Balnarring)

The Balbirooroo Wetlands has lots of bird life with bird hides and information boards at intervals along the track which provide details of the flora and fauna in the area. Balbirooroo is a Koori word meaning 'ibis'.

The entrance to the Balbirooroo Wetlands is near the corner of Frankston-Flinders Road and Civic Court.

The loop walk is an easy 0.9km walk suited to all ages and is wheel chair and pram friendly.

There is a car park and sheltered picnic facilities.

The history of the wetlands is that in 1993, the Balnarring Primary School community, together with local environmental groups, set out to develop a wetlands and woodlands on what was virtually nine hectares of grazing land, adjacent to the school. They could see the huge potential for something very special. The vision was to create a thriving habitat for indigenous plants, animals and birds which would become an integral part of the school curriculum and a valuable natural resource for the community. Hence, the school was clever enough to put in some bird hides as well as some interpretive information boards along the tracks. This gives you an idea of what you're seeing in regards to the flora and fauna.

Review:

There's no defined parking area so we parked beside the road in Civic Court which is near the entrance. Enter through the main gate at the corner of Civic Court and Frankston-Flinders Road. Turn right onto the gravel track. The whole area has information signs as part of the Pun Pun Aqua Trail (Pun Pun means a temporary waterhole from the language of the Bunurong and Woiworung aboriginal people who inhabited the area around Port Phillip Bay before European settlement). The wetlands are ephemeral which means that sometimes there's no water and we didn't see any water birds although there was some water.

When you reach the large grassy school oval, turn left and follow the fenceline to re-enter the wetlands area which has a boardwalk in this area. Then take the grassy track through bushland which rejoins the main track. Turn right and you'll exit out.
