Australian Islamic Centre (Newport)

The Australian Islamic Centre is an award-winning mosque and community centre in Newport which welcomes visitors of all faiths. As well as being an important place of worship and community gathering, the centre is a significant example of contemporary Australian architecture.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Glenn Murcutt AO in collaboration with Hakan Elevli, the building combines Islamic architectural traditions with Australian light, landscape and climate. Completed in 2016, one of its most striking features is the roof containing 96 coloured lanterns inspired by Islamic geometry. These allow coloured natural light to filter into the prayer hall.

The building is oriented towards Mecca and incorporates natural ventilation, passive cooling, contemporary geometric forms and water features.

The Australian Islamic Centre has received major architectural recognition, including the Victorian Architecture Medal and an Australian Institute of Architects National Award for Public Architecture. It was also recognised at the World Architecture Festival and shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

Visiting:

Visitors should dress modestly, with clothing covering the shoulders and knees. Headscarves are available for female visitors.

Shoes must be removed before entering the prayer areas and shoe racks are provided. Keep voices low, particularly during prayer, put mobile phones on silent and avoid walking in front of people who are praying.

Visitors are welcome to respectfully ask questions about the mosque and Islamic faith.
