Anglesea Main Beach

Anglesea Main Beach is one of the Surf Coast's most popular family beaches, where the Anglesea River meets Bass Strait. Combining a patrolled surf beach with the calm waters of the river estuary, it offers something for everyone, from swimming, paddling and surfing to kayaking, fishing and family picnics.

The wide sandy beach is backed by dunes and a large foreshore reserve, while the Anglesea River provides sheltered water that is ideal for young children and beginner paddlers. Depending on rainfall and seasonal conditions, the river may flow directly into the ocean or form a shallow lagoon behind the beach, creating an ever-changing landscape.

Surfers enjoy the consistent waves on the ocean side of the beach, while families often prefer the gentler conditions near the river mouth. The beach is also a popular place to walk, with scenic views stretching along the coastline towards Point Roadknight and the surrounding cliffs.

Seasonal lifesaving patrols, playground nearby, picnic tables, BBQs, walking and cycling paths, beach wheelchair availability (seasonal), cafés nearby and river access for kayaking and paddleboarding.

Surf Safety
Anglesea Main Beach is patrolled by the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club. Volunteer lifesavers patrol the beach on weekends and public holidays throughout the surf lifesaving season, while Life Saving Victoria lifeguards provide additional weekday patrols during the peak summer holiday period.

The beach has a moderate hazard rating, with conditions generally safer than many nearby surf beaches because of the broad sandy shoreline and river mouth. However, strong waves and rip currents can still develop, particularly away from the flagged area and when the river is flowing strongly into the ocean. Visitors should always swim between the red and yellow flags, supervise children closely and follow the directions of lifesavers.
