Anglesea Art Walk
Experience the joy of discovering a series of unique mosaic art works as you stroll along a 2.5 km walk through Anglesea.
The mosaic art pieces capture the history, flora and fauna of our unique environment.
Under the direction of community artist - Kate van Nooten, the Anglesea community worked together to create these iconic pieces.
We hope you enjoy the mosaics as much as you enjoy the walk around our seaside town.

1. Shipwreck
Location: Loveridge Lookout, Harvey Street, Anglesea
The Anglesea Historical Society chose a significant historical event that occurred in Anglesea during the evening of December 18th 1902. The “Inverlochy”, an iron barque, inbound from Liverpool to Melbourne, became stranded on Ingoldsby Reef. Her mixed cargo consisted of spirits, paper, chemicals, earthenware as well as steel cables for the Melbourne Tramway Company. It would appear that misty conditions were to blame for the Split Point Lighthouse being mistaken for that of Pt. Lonsdale Lighthouse. Eventually a prevailing breeze allowed the sea current to carry the vessel onto the reef. Conditions deteriorated and Captain Kendrick, with the ship’s company, abandoned the vessel and headed eastward in the lifeboats. Next morning, all landed safely, wet and miserable, near Barwon Heads. Most of the cargo was salvaged and the vessel eventually broke up. For many years, the “Inverlochy’s” bell graced the Anglesea Hotel balcony, but however, that too has disappeared from sight.
2. Rockpool
Location: Opposite Cnr Great Ocean Road and Minifie Avenue, Anglesea
The volunteers of the Anglesea & District Community House decided that the design of their mosaic would be a beautiful structure of art work rather than a depiction of the support and activities the ‘house’ provides for the community. The mosaic captures the beauty and richness of the Surfcoast and depicts the discovery of the wonders of this unique environment.
“A small child crouches over a rockpool and finds the beauty lying beneath the water”. This exquisite structure is a monument to celebrate the joy of exploring our diverse coastal community.
3. Flora and Fauna
Location: Anglesea Memorial Hall, 1B McMillan St, Anglesea
The rich biodiversity of our local indigenous flora and fauna is well recognised and The Anglesea, Aireys Inlet Society for the Protection of Flora and Fauna (ANGAIR) strives to protect these plants and animals. Preparing this mosaic, ANGAIR chose to share some of the knowledge and beauty of our natural environment by depicting a few special species. Some are widespread (Common Heath – Victoria’s floral emblem) while others are rare and found only in this district (Angahook Caladenia). ANGAIR hopes you enjoy viewing our mosaic and learning about the special flora and fauna as you explore the area.
4. Boat
Location: Lions Park, 7 Cameron Rd, Anglesea
This boat represents the use of the Anglesea River for many years and with it’s helping hands design symbolises the friendship of our town and the support given to anyone who needs our help. It is hoped that the table and chairs will be used for restful reflection beside the river whilst recognising the assistance the Anglesea and District Lions and Lionesses have provided to our community over forty years. Anglesea and District Lions and Lionesses are proud to be part of the largest volunteer service organisation in the world.
5. Horse and Carriage
Location: Cameron Park, 1 Cameron Rd, Anglesea
Swampy Creek, which is now known as Anglesea, was a tourist’s ‘hidden gem’ back in the mid 1800’s. It was visited by the keenest adventurers hoping to partake in fishing, hunting and swimming. As it’s reputation grew, the number of visitors increased and the outdoor adventure activities developed to include boating, athletics, camping and social gatherings. Thus, more and more people chose to visit this picturesque, resort style locality. Visitors travelled from far and wide, initially arriving on foot, some via horseback but eventually, due to ever increasing demand, a coach service by horse and cart was offered. This was the successful beginning of Victoria’s Iconic Family Tourist destination. Business and Tourism Anglesea (BATA) continues to support the tourist who enjoys ‘fun and adventure naturally’.
6. Circle of Learning
Location: Anglesea Primary School, 85 Camp Rd, Anglesea
The Anglesea Primary School’s mosaic symbolises the ethos of our school community. The design places the school children at the core amidst a variety of learning tools, surrounded by the beautiful natural environment in which we learn – flora, fauna, river and sea. Each element of the design was produced individually by students and staff attending school in 2010. Parents and friends of the school worked with the students to complete the mosaic. This project coincided with the relocation of our school to it’s new site in 2011. It is a celebration of the past and future of education in Anglesea.
