Alvie - Lake Corangamite Nature Reserve

Lake Corangamite Nature Reserve provides public access to the shoreline of Lake Corangamite, Australia’s largest permanent saltwater lake. The five-hectare reserve is reached from Baynes Road and is sometimes locally known as the “bathing boxes” because the site was historically used as a swimming beach.

Lake Corangamite covers more than 23,000 hectares and forms part of the internationally significant Western District Lakes Ramsar site. It provides permanent and seasonal habitat for local and migratory waterbirds, rare plants and threatened wildlife. The reserve contains potential foraging habitat for the endangered Corangamite Water Skink.

A short unsealed walking path leads through revegetated areas towards the lakeshore. The reserve is best suited to a brief nature walk, birdwatching, photography and appreciating the lake’s distinctive saline environment.
