Review:

The Town Hall has many interesting areas with art work to explore. It is well worth a visit.

The gallery has the following welcome message to visitors: "This is a space that connects our community with a broad range of ideas, cultures and art practices from Boroondara and the wider contemporary Australian arts landscape. We embrace and acknowledge the diversity of our community and the many stories that form our shared history. The artworks on display feature painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and video art. These exhibitions are designed to delight the senses, spark the imagination, and question our understanding of the world we live in. Please be aware that some of the themes or subject matter on display may be challenging for some visitors."

Start with the white Carrera marble sculpture of Joan of Arc by Raffaello Romanelli (1856 - 1928) near the stairs on the ground floor. Up the stairs next to the landing is a lovely stained glass window.

On the ground floor is an open room with an exhibition of artworks from the Town Hall Gallery Collection. Next to this area is the Town Hall Gallery Emporium which offers a range of gifts, clothing, stationery, jewellery, homewares and small art pieces made by local and international artisans.

Also on the ground floor is the "Explore & Create" area where kids can do art.

When we visited there was an exhibition "Contemporising the Modern: Australian Modern and Contemporary Photography" which celebrated the dual nature of the photograph as a carrier of historical and social information, as well as a valued artistic and aesthetic object. Showcasing photographic works that speak of 20th and 21st-century Australia, the exhibition explored the development of Australian photography and its coming of age in a period when photographers were still pushing for their work to be accepted as a pure art form.

Next to the galleries was a Reading Nook with comfy seats and a selection of books about the topics and artists displayed in the galleries.

The space also has water coolers and a cafe - the Second Empire Cafe.
