Themeda Grasslands (Caroline Springs)

Themeda Grasslands (Caroline Springs)

The 4ha reserve has a raised metal walkway and lookout tower that invites visitors into it to experience the flora close up. It is an example of natural temperate grasslands of southern volcanic plain. The walkway protects the grassland from trampling, raises visitors above the abundant rocks and gives visitors a unique perspective.

Before the development of Caroline Springs this small grassland was one of the better quality patches of native grassland within a larger area that had a long history of agricultural use. It probably survived because it was quite rocky which deterred stock and prevented ploughing.

There are also sculptures "Rythm and Seed" which reflect different life stages of Kangaroo Grass by renowned Melbourne sculptor Rudi Jass.

Occasionally you may see an Eastern Grey Kangaroo in the area.

Review:

There are lots of rocks and grasses and a metal elevated walkway connected to a lookout tower runs through the area. There are two sculptures, one at each end. The best time to come is when wildflowers are in bloom, otherwise it's not exactly exciting.

Access for Dogs:

Dogs must be on a leash.
