Slow Clay Centre (Collingwood)

Slow Clay Centre specialises in ceramics education by some of Australia's highly regarded ceramic artists and educators. Founder, Jane Sawyer, is an exhibiting ceramic artist and committed educator. She holds a B Ed (Art) and an MFA (Ceramics by Research) and is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics. Her teaching experience spans the full range of the education sector and she is active in the broader industry, serving on the board of Craft Victoria and currently, The World Craft Council, Australia. She established Slow Clay Centre in 2012, expanding upon her long-standing private studio classes and bringing in respected colleagues to deliver together a program that not only covers skill development but does so within the art-craft-design matrix in an open, exploratory and developmental framework.

At Slow Clay Centre's core are 8-week courses (attend once a week) in the wheel, hand building and porcelain. They are developmental and cater for all levels from beginners to advanced. To this trilogy of courses we add regular workshops by visiting specialists in Glaze Development, Mold Making, Surface Decoration and Printing on Clay. We also host visiting national and international guest artists to give high-level workshops in their areas of expertise and to share their unique pathways, their techniques and concepts.

The Slow Clay Method (TM) for teaching the pottery wheel is unique and developed over nearly 30 years of teaching the wheel. It is based on the Japanese techniques Jane Sawyer studied as an apprentice and, combined with European techniques, is a synthesis of awareness of correct posture, mindfulness and the breath, and efficient use of energy.
