Picola Silo Art

Picola Silo Art

The artwork, by Jimmy DVate, on the metal silo depicts the flora and fauna which you will likely see on a visit to the Barmah Forest today (2020), including a couple of the more threatened species.

Looking left to right the wildlife includes
  • Superb Parrot
  • Australasian Bittern - Also known as the Bunyip Bad. This threatened species of the Heron family is a shy, Semi-nocturnal bird which inhabits the wetlands of the Forest
  • Brumbies - Horses that run wild in the Barmah Forest
  • Kangaroo & joey
  • Peregrine Falcon - A pair have been nesting on the top of this concrete silo for some years
  • Freckled Duck
  • Emu
  • Eastern Great Egret
Fauna which features in this painting includes:
  • River Red Gum and Yellow Box trees
  • Moira Grass
  • Native Broughton pea and Bulbine Lilies.
Indigenous recognition - The large central tree features a scar which recognises the occupation of the indigenous people who lived in the forest area prior to settlement The scar was created by the removal of a strip of bark to create a canoe.

Hook - If you look carefully at the painting you may be lucky enough to see a 'hook'. The artist, Jimmy Dvate, has painted a wayward fishing hook into this picture as a reference back to the past. Picola was nicknamed 'The Hook' in the early days of the railways coming to town because it was 'on the end of the line'. See if you can find it.

The concrete silos will be painted as a later date as funding allows.
