Museum of Australian Photography (Wheelers Hill)

The former Monash Gallery of Art has transformed into the Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh), the preeminent national photography museum, dedicated to championing Australian photography and its vital role in culture and society.

Museum of Australian Photography is situated on a parkland affording spectacular views of Melbourne's south-east. The original part of the building was designed by internationally renowned architect Harry Seidler. It remains the only formal art gallery space designed by Seidler. With subsequent additions to the building by Cox Sanderson Ness (2000), Museum of Australian Photography is a fine example of contemporary Australian architecture.

Situated in landscaped grounds with stunning views of the Dandenong Ranges, Museum of Australian Photography is located on a landmark site once occupied by an early homestead. A sculpture park enables visitors to enjoy their art experience both inside and outside the gallery.

Review:

Even if you are not a huge photography fan, there is plenty here to enjoy. The site normally has a number of exhibitions running in one large room which is normally divided into two plus a number of smaller rooms.

The exhibitions are beautifully curated and set-up in an interesting way. Often there are accompanying elements targeted to children.

There is a beautiful sculpture garden at the rear of the building with a pleasant pond with picnic tables and walking path around the edge. Some sculptures are permanent and some change over time.

The Monash Library is co-located in the same complex as the Art Gallery and there is parking at both the front and rear of the buildings. There is a cafe serving meals, rolls and drinks. The cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating (depending on the season).

There is also a gift shop area with books and knick-knacks for sale.
