Shoreham Beach

Shoreham Beach

Shoreham is a small holiday settlement lying between Flinders Road and the coast. A foreshore reserve parallels two beaches in Shoreham. Beach Road runs out to Shoreham Beach, where a long car park runs between the bluffs and the back of the low beach. There is also a picnic area located here.

Stony Creek drains across the northern end of the beach. The beach is very protected and usually has no waves. The 700 m long Shoreham Beach faces almost due east. Extensive sand and reef flats front the beach and, as a result, the beach has deep water only at mid to high tide. The tidal flats, and often seaweed, are exposed at low tide.

Swimming is better at mid to high tide when the water is in.

The following are not allowed in the foreshore reserve: overnight stays or camping, fires, personal watercraft.

The beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 3/10 (Least hazardous).

The Pine trees you see on the foreshore are protected under the Victorian Heritage Act 1995. The first trees were planted by early landholders prior to 1920. Pine trees were a classic seaside planting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries on shorelines around Port Phillip Bay and Western Port. Similar plantings protecting other beaches such as Merricks, Somers and Balnarring have gradually been removed over the years. This increases the significance of the Shoreham Pines as one of the few fine examples still remaining on a Victorian foreshore reserve. These Monterey Pines, Pinus radiata, give the Shoreham foreshore its distinctive character, and from the water form a striking contrast between sea and sky. The beach was fondly named The Pines by surfers in the 1950s. These trees still serve as a landmark for fishermen and surfers.

Access for Dogs:

Dogs must be on a lead. No dogs from 9am to 7pm during daylight savings.

Review:

The beach has some facilities such as a large car park and toilets. The beach had a lot of seaweed when we visited but stretches for quite a long way which gave a lot of space for surfers.
