Point Leo Beach

Point Leo Beach

This is the quieter, safer and more sheltered of the Point Leo beaches, but is only suitable for swimming when the tide is in.

The small settlement of Point Leo is set back from the 20 m high point, which is covered by a wide foreshore reserve. Three beaches surround the point: Point Leo Beach, the Point Beach and Point Leo Surf Beach.

Point Leo Beach is located on the east side of the point and is 500 m long. It faces east and is located between northern bluffs and Point Leo to the south, by which it is protected. A boat club and long boat ramp are located in the southern corner.

The beach receives low waves, and has a narrow high tide beach fronted by 200 to 300 m wide sand and rock flats, that are exposed at low tide.

Swimming - A relatively safe beach away from the boating activities. Better at mid to high tide.

The beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 3/10 (Least hazardous)

Access for Dogs:

Dogs are prohibited from the beach between 9am and 7pm throughout the Daylight Saving period. Outside of these times, dogs must be on leash at all times.

Cost:

A $4 per car parking fee is applicable if you are coming to Point Leo during the season. It is payable each Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm between late September until the end of the Easter School holidays 2018, and every day over the summer school holidays.

Point Leo is an entirely self funded public reserve and receives no financial assistance from local, state or federal governments to manage 50 ha of public land. This includes the maintenance of five public toilet blocks, 4 kms of roads, two playgrounds, 25 ha of mown open parkland, the camping reserve and 3 kms of coast line. It is run by a volunteer Committee of Management. The only income to run the park is the money collected from parking and camping fees.

Review:

This is the most protected beach at Point Leo and the easiest access is from the car park near the playground. This path has a table and tap at the bottom. The furthest car park also has a wooden staircase with access to the beach.

The Point Leo Boat Club is located on the beach and there is a long elevated slipway which protrudes into the water. The beach is a curved sandy arc. On the northern end the beach is a bit narrow (depending on the tide) and has layers of big round stones forming the back of the beach.
