South Beach (Somers)

South Beach (Somers)

South Beach is located on the eastern Somers foreshore, at the foot of 20 m high bluffs, containing a bushy foreshore reserve. The bluffs terminate at the end of the beach, where the long Sandy Point begins. The 1 km long beach is a relatively narrow, steep beach with deep water off the beach at high tide, but tidal flats exposed at low tide.

There is off street parking at Somers Beach Parking Area at the corner of Belvedere Road and Miramar Road which has the "hundred steps" wooden staircase leading down to the beach.

Swimming is best at mid to high tide, and relatively safe when the waves and wind are low. Strong westerlies will produce a drag along the beach.

The beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 3/10 (Least hazardous)

Review:

A slightly isolated beach which has a wooden staircase for access plus a path leading down from Western Park Road and another from South Sea Road. The trudge back up the staircase can be a lung burner on a hot day. The beach has some rocky areas at the eastern end while it is sandy in the middle. Eventually as you travel westwards you reach a rocky point where the beach becomes rockier again. There are no facilities such as water, food or bins at the beach. Everything you bring down to the beach has to be lugged back again.
