Lagoon Reserve Dog Off Leash Area (Port Melbourne)

Lagoon Reserve Dog Off Leash Area (Port Melbourne)

A huge round grassy area bordered by trees. There are plenty of seats set around the grassy area and bins are located at lots of entry points. A concrete path runs along the eastern side of the reserve. There are a number of tables in the reserve. In the north west corner there is a picnic area with three tables, BBQ, toilets with artwork on the side and water tap where people have placed some bowls. Lagoon Reserve is home to the Emerald Hill Cricket Club. If no cricket is being placed this is a great place with lots of other dogs for interactions.

When Sandridge (later Port Melbourne) was first established, this area was a saltwater lagoon. During high tide it was 27 acres in size and up to 10 feet deep. Bridges crossed the lagoon, and it was popular for boating and fishing. Despite years of debate, the lagoon was gradually filled in by 1929. The reclaimed land is now housing and parkland.
