Somers Beach Dog Off Leash East Area (Somers)

Somers beach is 700m long and is located on the south-eastern side of the Mornington Peninsula.

There is off street parking at Somers Beach Parking Area at the corner of Belvedere Road and Miramar Road which has the "hundred steps" wooden staircase leading down to the beach.

There is 200 metres of sandy beach, east from the bottom of "hundred steps" where dogs are allowed off leash without restriction.

Note: To the west of the bottom of "hundred steps" is another area with time restricted off leash access for dogs.

Access for Dogs:

Off leash all the time all year.

Review:

A narrow beach which initially has lots of rocky areas along the beach. The first part of the beach has rocks to prevent beach erosion covered in wire which has lots of sharp edges which is a danger to dogs and children.

After 50m the beach widens out but is still rocky on the waterline. As you continue the rocks disappear from the waterline and you come across a lot of dead trees lying across the beach. Even so this is a nice place for dogs to walk and explore. After about 30 minutes you come to the point where the beach changes into 'Navy / Sandy' beach. This point is obvious because the land to the north is a military range with signs such as 'Danger, Military Range Boundary Live Firing'. You don't need to be Einstein to realise not to venture off the beach area.

The climb back up the staircase can be tough on a hot day. There is a bin at the car park. You'll generally see a lot of dogs along the beach during summer when it is one of the few places which is off leash all the year round.
