Sea Lake - Lake Tyrrell
5 km north of Sea Lake just off the Calder Highway is a viewing platform overlooking Lake Tyrrell, the largest salt lake in Victoria. The salt is mined every year by Cheetham Salt, which is one of the largest employers in the district. The salt is harvested and processed for culinary and industrial use.
Lake Tyrrell is dry most of the year, although at times it may be covered by shallow water. Sometimes the lake has a beautiful pink colour. The best time to see the colour is during warm and wet periods when shallow water covers the lake.
The Mallee Rally is held every year at Lake Tyrrell, with rally cars completing four laps of the 120km track.
Lake Tyrrell is an important Aboriginal heritage site with the local Boorong tribe using the lake in their astronomy. The viewing platform is used for looking at the stars at night and every 2 years is host to the Star Party which sees astronomers from around Australia coming to star gaze under our big sky.
The Lake environment is host to Mallee reptiles, kangaroos, emus, white-faced chats, and an inland gullery.
To get to Lake Tyrrell, which is Victoria's largest salt lake covering 20,860 hectares, head north on the Calder Highway and it's well signposted on your right-hand side. There is a viewing platform and information bay.
