Koonung Creek Reserve Dog Off Leash Area (Mont Albert North)

Koonung Creek Reserve Dog Off Leash Area (Mont Albert North)

There is a shared use path with a strip of grass beside the path bordered by a strip of trees. Along the path you can hear the constant sound of cars on the Eastern Freeway. Bushy Creek runs along the northern edge beside the freeway. If you follow the narrow shared use path to the west it becomes an on leash area and dangerous because bikes are travelling quickly in a confined area. Avoid this area. There are a number of paths leading into the central area from 153 Winfield Road and Jackson Avenue. These feeder areas have the advantage of not being shared with bikes. The area from 24 Jackson Road is a fairly large grassy triangle dotted with trees with a playground at the south end.

To the east the path continues towards Elgar Park to the Koonung Creek Wetlands area where it seems to be on leash. There is a curved boardwalk above the wetlands area which joins via some steps to a pedestrian bridge over the freeway. I always find it interesting to look down on the cars flashing by underneath. You really get an appreciation of how much power and speed would be involved in a road accident.

The whole area suffers from lack of signage and it is quite difficult to understand what areas are on leash and what areas are off leash.

Dogs must be on-lead in the adjoining Elgar Park and are prohibited from entering wetland areas.
