Russell Street Sculptures (Central Melbourne)

Russell Street Sculptures (Central Melbourne)

These two mysterious sculptures are located on the median strip of Russell Street between Bourke Street and Little Collins Street. The position was the location of Melbourne's first underground toilet. It opened in 1902 and was decommissioned in 1994. This area also has a ventilation point for decommissioned Telstra tunnels.

The sculptures are separated by an area of car parking and some plane trees. The northern most sculpture is 'A History apparatus - Vessel Craft & Beacon' by Chris Reynolds which was installed 1994-5.

The southern most sculpture is 'Ceremony and Vehicle for Conveying Spirit' by Maurie Hughes which was installed in 1996. This sculpture was commissioned with a brief to "incorporate the functional and visually meaningful elements of the decommissioned Telstra vent.
