Sandown Street Beach (Brighton)

Sandown Street Beach (Brighton)

Sandown Street Beach is enclosed by the pier and breakwater with boats moored offshore.

At the southern end of the beach is the large Middle Brighton pier and breakwater, in lee of which is Sandon Street Beach. Two rock groynes also cross the northern end of Sandon Street Beach.

The adjacent yacht club has a steep, narrow strip of sand; remnants of once wider beaches. Sandon Street Beach, on the other hand, is protected by the breakwater, and the shoreline has built out up to 100 m in its lee, while erosion to either end has exposed the seawall.

The beach faces west and is exposed to westerly winds and waves, however waves are reduced by the structures. The beaches are usually calm, or have a low shore break when waves reach the beach.

Swimming - Sandown Street beach is usually calm in lee of the breakwater. The best bathing is at high tide, as sand flats are exposed at low tide.

Review:

There is very limited parking in this area. From Sandown Street head west for 50m to find a triangle of sand which is fenced for dogs off leash. A sandy finger goes in the north-south direction and the east facing beach shore has a lot of sea-weed. The west side is cleaner with less sea-weed. There is a reasonable area of sand but it is probably best to leave this beach to the dogs and their owners.

Access for Dogs:

A sandy beach that is completely fenced off and has no leash restrictions all year round.
