Blairgowrie Beach

Blairgowrie Beach

Blairgowrie Beach is a long low beach, backed by a reserve and all facilities and fronted by shallow sand flats.

Blairgowrie is the first in a series of long, sandy beaches and wide sand flats that swing in a 24 km long, north facing arc from The Sisters to Martha Point. Blairgowrie Beach is 5 km long and backed by a continuous foreshore reserve and the highway, all the way to the low White Cliffs that form the eastern boundary.

The reserve contains all visitor facilities including a narrow, 200 m long jetty, boat ramps and a camping area. This section of the beach faces north-east and is usually calm, except during northerly winds when low wind waves are generated. The beach is usually narrow and fronted by 200 to 300 m wide, shallow sand flats.

Swimming - A relatively safe beach, particularly on the sand flats. Best at mid to high tide when the flats are covered. Be careful off the flats as there is deep water and tidal currents.

Blairgowrie beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 1/10 (Least hazardous). It is unpatrolled.

Review:

The main swimming area is opposite the Blairgowrie shopping centre and is quite shallow. The beach isn't very big. There is also another beach which is protected by the large jetties of the Yacht Squadron Safe Boat Harbour.

Below White Cliffs to the west the very narrow beach curves around past a wooden groyne and a series of beach huts. There are steps which lead up to a vantage point at the top of the cliff. This area is in front of the Tyrone Campground which has a narrow beach with grassy, flat dunes and some beach huts.

In front of the Blairgowrie shopping area (not much parking available) there are tracks through the foreshore area to the beach. It's a fairly narrow beach and at the east and west ends are wooden groynes to help keep the sand on the beach - success rate is moderate. There are a number of beach huts in the dunes and to the west is the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron Safe Boat Harbour.

To the west of the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron is a carpark with some shaded tables next to it. There are wooden steps leading down to a sandy beach where the jetties provide some protection from the waves. The beach then passes to the west in front of Stringers Campground and Cameron's Bight Campground.

Access for Dogs:

Dogs are prohibited on the beach between 9am and 7pm during Daylight Savings Period. At other times of the day (7pm - 9am), dogs are permitted leash free. Dogs must immediately be brought under effective control if it threatens or annoys any person or animal. The "leash-free" beach does NOT include vegetated parts of the foreshore reserve.
