Mount Martha North Beach (Mount Martha)

Mount Martha North Beach (Mount Martha)

Mount Martha North beach, which is 900 m long, is one of three narrow beaches north of Balcombe Creek in Mount Martha which is backed by boat sheds and bluffs.

The Esplanade parallels the shore on top of the bluffs. There is a car park and easy access on the north side of the creek. There are numerous boat sheds lining the rear of Mount Martha North beach.

Swimming - A moderately safe beach when waves are low, however, still watch the variable water depth off the beach owing to the bars, channels and rip holes. Use care if there are any waves breaking, as the rips will be flowing.

Mount Martha North Beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 3/10 (Least hazardous). The beach is unpatrolled.

Review:

The middle part of the beach is long, fairly wide and sandy with very few stones in the sand. The beach is safe for swimming.

The further north you go the narrower and rockier the beach becomes. At the northern end of the beach is a long row of beach huts (90 in total). Often there is very little sand in front of the beach huts and it is very rocky. Many of the beach huts have been damaged during periods of extreme weather. The most northern huts are accessed by a long gravel path with some steps from a point opposite #539 Esplanade. These huts are in particularly poor condition and access behind the huts is blocked. The cliff behind the boxes is crumbling and landslides have destroyed a fence which was erected to prevent erosion. Please avoid this area.

Generally there is an overall migration of sand from the north to the south and the more south you go at this beach, the nicer it is.

Opposite #506 Esplanade there is a carpark, two unshaded tables and toilets which have some nice sea murals painted on the exterior walls.

The southern border of the beach is Balcombe Creek which was about 5m wide and flowing quite fast when we were last at this beach. This creek flows from The Briars wildlife reserve.

This beach is not patrolled but the Mount Martha South Beach is patrolled by the Mount Martha Life Saving Club.
