Inverloch Shell Museum

Inverloch Shell Museum

The shell museum contains one of the world's best displays of shells with over 7,000 specimens on display including many local varieties.

Many of the specimens on display at the museum have come from private collections. The Jack Lewis collection was the first to be purchased for the Inverloch Community in 1980. Other valuable collections have been added since then.

The collection is owned by the Bass Coast Shire under the auspices of the South Gippsland Conservation Society. The collection is constantly reviewed and updated by local members of the Malacological Society of Australia.

Bring the kids. They'll love the hands-on experience that our touch-table provides.

There are also many specimens of other sea creatures found in our local waters.

Points of interest include:
  • Gorgonians from Bass Strait
  • Sinistral (left-handed) shell
  • Paper Nautilus with preserved female octopus intact
