Montsalvat (Eltham)

Montsalvat is Australia's oldest artists' community, set amid unique grounds and buildings, a place where art is made, taught, exhibited, performed and celebrated. Founded by Justus Jorgensen in 1934, Montsalvat, throughout its long and productive history, has nurtured the creation of art in all its forms - painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film, jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles, poetry and literature, drama, musical composition, performance and musical instrument making.

Review:

An interesting location which is best suited to adults rather than children or families. There are a range of interesting old buildings to explore, many of which contain artwork to view. An interesting area is around the swimming pool (where swimming by the public is not allowed).

One section has a large number of artist studios, although most were closed on the weekend when we visited. Even so, it was interesting to explore all the items laying around outside the studios and take a peek through the windows to see the artwork in each of the studios.

There are some vegetable and herb gardens with ponds but these are not that spectacular for visitors.

There are artworks exhibited in the Barn Gallery, Long Gallery, Residents Gallery and Great Hall. A quirky element is the door knocker on the front door of the studio of the Goldsmith Jeanette Dyke.
