Wannon - Nigretta Falls

Wannon - Nigretta Falls

The Wannon and Nigretta waterfalls are located west of Hamilton. Turn off the Glenelg Highway 5 kilometres west of Hamilton on the Nigretta Road and follow the signs.

The Falls are fed by the Wannon River that has its head waters in the Grampians mountains. The Nigretta Falls has a multi-channel cascade of smaller drops.

The amount of water varies with the time of year. The best time to view the falls is between June and October.

The Nigretta Falls are broader than Wannon Falls with the water tumbling over the rocks rather than simply plunging to a pool below. There is some outstanding scenery and good fishing, as well as picnic-barbecue areas and a deep pool for swimming.

It is possible to use the Wannon-Nigretta Fall Road to travel between the Nigretta and Wannon Falls.

Review:

The Nigretta Falls are more interesting for the kids than the nearby Wannon Falls since there are steps and stairs down to the base of the falls. At the top there are two observation decks with views of the falls for those that don't want to take the walk. One offers vista views while the other is a view from above the falls.

When we visited in early January there were some small flows of water coming down the rock walls. There was also a big dead tree which provided climbing opportunities for the kids.

There is a big grassy area with unshaded table and a shelter with table and BBQ. Toilets are provided.
