fortyfivedownstairs is a not-for-profit theatre and gallery based at 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, Australia. We showcase independent, experimental and thought-provoking visual art, theatre, live music and discussion.

fortyfivedownstairs was established to provide an affordable and supportive inner city venue for theatre performances, music and exhibitions by a wide range of artists: to show work of excellence to local, interstate and overseas audiences.

Youth Engagement - Home to a colourful programme of theatrical performance and contemporary art exhibitions, fortyfivedownstairs offers energised educational experiences that nicely complement your school's curriculum. We are open to visits from school groups of all ages, and can provide an introductory talk about the current works by prior arrangement.

Youth Ambassadors Program - Youth Ambassadors are inspired individuals in year 11 or 12 who consider themselves advocates of the creative arts. They could be budding critics, visual artists, sound designers, curators, or simply attentive audience members.

The program includes gallery and theatre visits (with subsidized ticket prices for a friend or family member of their choice), artist-led workshops or forums, and invitations to participate in critical discussions around the featured works. Students are given the freedom to debate, test, and puzzle over ideas with like-minded students from other schools and interested adults. Through this, fortyfivedownstairs hopes to provide individuals with the opportunity to pursue a lifelong interest and involvement with the creative arts.

In return, ambassadors are encouraged to share their experiences with their friends, family, and school community, further promoting the creative arts and fortyfivedownstairs.

Review:

There is a gallery and theatre. The gallery comprises one large room with a smaller room next to it. When we last visited there was an exhibition "The Last Days of Summer" by Peter Hyatt.
