Darebin Parklands (Alphington)

Darebin Parklands is a conservation park sited along the Darebin Creek. Darebin Parklands is a wonderful setting for walks and escaping into the natural environment, and is located only 5km from Melbourne's CBD. The park has a full time Ranger coordinating the Education Centre which details the parks rich history and committment to conservation and environmental sustainability.

The Darebin Creek Trail runs through the centre of the park and provides shared trail access through to Bundoora Park 10km to the north.

Features of the park include natural rock faces, wetlands, historial olive trees, Spiritual Healing Trail, large areas of natural environment and much more. Tours can be organised by contacting the Education Centre.

Recreational activities include bike riding, dog walking off-lead (except 2m either side of the shared path). Toilets, picnic tables and barbecue facilities are provided.

Review:

Next is the parking area is a huge shelter with a table and BBQs, water tap, toilets and a big rough log table without seats. The Darebin Creek Shared Trail goes along the west side and there are plenty of water birds around the small ponds. There are nicely positioned seats with good views along the route. This area can flood during heavy rain and so it would be best to avoid in very wet weather. There are also some rough tracks beside the creek to follow and a bridge enables you to cross between different sides of the creek. There are plenty of maps situated throughout the park which point out all the features. There is a nice lookout and a spiritual healing trail (brochures were at the Park Rangers Office).

Having lived in Melbourne for all of almost 40 years, I'm amazed I hadn't discovered this little piece of nature sooner! An amazingly pristine snippet of the natural beauty of Melbourne, less than 15min from the CBD! - felt like it was the heart of Victorian Country. If you need to get away from the hustle and bustle, and back to some natural bush, but lack the hours required to drive away - This is the place! Heavenly! Will definitely be coming back! *8vD
