Local History Park (Burwood)

The 700m section of the Gardiners Creek Trail between Highbury Road and the Burwood Highway is home to the Local History Park. The section closest to Highbury Road has a fossil footpath which leads on to a big sculpture titled "Geosculpture" highlighting different types of rocks. Then you come across a Koori footpath with embedded wooden snake symbols. A little further on is a heavy timber bridge which links two areas of parkland divided by Gardiners Creek. You can cross the bridge to get to the settlers shelter which has a water tap. Just along the track is a small orchard of fruit trees and you then reach the site of Australia's first drive-in picture theatre which opened in 1954 and closed in 1983. There is a huge metal frame of an FJ Holden which the kids can climb over and drive. This area also has a number of tree stump carvings.
