Simpson Park / Somers Trail / Heatherdale Bushland Reserve (Mitcham)

The indigenous (i.e. local) plants of an area are of special significance as they are most suited to the local weather and soil conditions (in other words they are environmentally appropriate). They also provide habitat for the indigenous fauna, such as birds, butterflies, lizards etc.

In this area there is a focus on remnant bushland revegetation and regeneration to enhance natural habitat.

Review:

We started at the end of Simpson Street and went past an oval with a water tap on a concrete path and then crossed Cochrane Street to an average quality fully fenced playground with a water tap. The path changes to an asphalt path and the Somers Trail leads past a (dirty) creek which had some ducks. This area has a fairly thin strip of trees and grass with houses on both sides. After crossing Fuller Street, the asphalt track continues past a big sunken retarding basin (which can flood) and to an average playground. Cross Purches Street to get to Heatherdale Reserve with ovals and tennis courts. There is a water tap near the pavilion and a playground in the north east corner. The path then wanders through an open area with a reedy pond and ends at the busy Heatherdale Road.
