Koonung Creek Parklands (Donvale - Mont Albert North)

Discover the array of recreational activities in Elgar Park and Koonung Creek Reserve, which together make up the Koonung Creek Parklands. Hockey, cricket, dog walking, bird-watching, playgrounds, the Box Hill Miniature Steam Railway, a wide variety of indigenous plants and a spectacular wetland make this a must visit area.

There is a playground next to the Box Hill Miniature Steam Railway near the corner of Belmore Road and Elgar Road. There are also a number of playgrounds and fitness stations along the route.

This is part of the The Koonung Creek Trail follows the Eastern Freeway from Springvale Rd (Melway 48 F5) to Burke Rd (Melway 31 K11) where it connects with the Main Yarra Trail. 600m west of Middleborough Rd the trail is located on the south side of the freeway. East of that point it runs along the north side of the freeway. The trail has a total length of 13.5km with some minor hilly sections on a concrete and bitumen path.

Review:

We started at the Springvale Road end of the trail and parked at the end of Darvall Street (Melways Map: 48 Ref: F5). The trail goes beside tall walls which reduce the noise from the freeway almost entirely. The path is smooth, good quality paved surface and is ideal for bikes or walking. After a while the trail follows beside Koonung Creek. The trail is a bit hilly and certainly couldn't be called flat.

At Bowen Road there is a water refill station and after crossing under Blackburn Road there is another water tap at Boronia Grove. Make sure you test out the echos in the tunnel under Blackburn Road. After this point you can either take a tunnel under the freeway to the south side or continue (which we did) along the north side of the freeway through a wetlands area. There is an exit point here to Wetherby Road but the trail continues on to Tram Road and Elgar Road.
