San Remo - George Bass Coastal Walk
The George Bass Coastal Walk is a cliff top walk that stretches from the outskirts of San Remo at Punchbowl Road, to the Bass Highway (just opposite the hall at Peppermint Road) in Kilcunda.
The walk is approximately seven kilometres long and takes an average of 2 hours to walk one way. The walk offers spectacular views of the coastline and follows the route of the explorer George Bass' epic voyage of discovery along the southern edge of the Anderson Peninsula, over 200 years ago.
An average level of fitness is required for the walk as it includes using stiles over farm fences.
The George Bass Coastal Walk now links into the Bass Coast Rail Trail so it is possible to walk from the Punch Bowl in San Remo all the way to the centre of Wonthaggi.
Access for Dogs:
Dogs on-lead are permitted on the walk.
Review:
We started the walk in Kilcunda. You will find the start of the track approximately opposite the intersection of Peppermint Road and the Bass Highway (The Kilcunda Community Centre is located there). The full walk finishes at Punchbowl Road in San Remo.
The walk starts on a hard gravel surface but later (at point No. 11 on the map) reverts to a grassy track cut through the native grasses. You need to be a bit careful since the track goes past the edge of high unstable cliffs and there are no fences. There are occasional benches to rest on and a number of steep sections. There are a number of access points to the sandy beaches (not suitable for swimming due to the strong currents). The easiest place is at point No. 9 where there is a gentle track down to the beach. All along the route there are magnificent ocean vistas.
It took us about 3 hours to get to point No. 9 and return with 8-9 year old kids allowing time for some exploration and rests.
