Beechworth - Woolshed Falls

Located in the Woolshed Valley only a 10 minute drive from Beechworth are the historic and impressive Woolshed Falls. More than 8000 miners and diggers once worked the banks of the river here being one of the richest goldfields in Victoria.

As you enter the Woolshed Falls carpark there is a observation deck on the top left side offering great views of the falls and the valley below. There is an excellent walk around the perimeter of woolshed falls that takes in some interesting features and mining diversions.

If you plan to wander down to the waterfalls themselves then take special care as the rocks are uneven and can be slippery. After heavy rainfalls the water can be quit high and cover many familiar stepping stones. There is also a sharp fall into the valley below.

The scenery is impressive here and the rock pools are a great place to cool off during summer with some smaller cascades flowing from one rock pool to the next.

To get to Woodshed Falls from Beechworth, head towards Wodonga, then take the Chiltern Road just past the 100km sign out of Beechworth. At the bottom of the winding road look for McFeeters Road and turn left. Continue along this road until it turns to gravel, then across the bridge. The turn to Woolshed Falls is on the right.

Review:

This is a hidden gem close to Beechworth. There are some walking tracks leading from the car park back towards Beechworth. The track that branches off back to the falls is closed. However you can follow the track for 600m along the side of a cliff (with secure fences) and see evidence of old mining operations with information panels.

The car park area has a BBQ, tables and toilets. About 50m from the car park is a great view point across the waterfall.

You can also walk down to the top of the waterfall area. The kids had great fun scrambling over all the rocks and small ledges but you have to be VERY watchful to make sure they cannot fall down and be swept down to the top of the waterfall, especially when it is wet and the rocks are slippery.
