Beechworth - Burke Museum

Beechworth - Burke Museum

Experience one of regional Victoria's undiscovered treasures - the Burke Museum.

In 1863 the Museum was added to the Beechworth Athenaeum and Public Library building in honour of Robert O'Hara Burke the explorer. Burke had served as superintendent of Police at Beechworth from 1854 to 1858.

Discover the early collections of the Museum, including Aboriginal artefacts from south-eastern Australia purchased in 1868 and an unusual natural history collection of the 1860's.

  • Examine one of the original Ned Kelly Death Masks and learn about Ned Kelly's association with Beechworth (the Ned Kelly Vault)
  • See the Beechworth Chinese Community collection, including a small number of 19th century Chinese banners.
  • Experience the sights and sounds in the 'Street of Shops', a reproduction of Beechworth's streetscape last century.
  • Changing temporary exhibitions throughout the year include objects from the collection and address aspects of local history.
