Dartmoor - Avenue of Honour and Fairytale Tree Carvings
The Avenue of Honour was planted in 1918. The trees, Atlantic Cedars, commemorated 60 World War One servicemen and nurses from the Dartmoor District. But just as age wearied the war veterans, it also wearied the trees, making them a safety risk.
In 1998 nine trees were carved by chainsaw artist Kevin Gilders to depict service men and women in the army, navy and air force.
The collection of chainsaw-sculpted artwork has recently grown, with the creation of a charming nursery rhyme tree featuring over 20 fairytale characters. The fairy-tale tree and two other carvings are located at the Village Green Playground.
There are three lovely wooden picnic tables beside the river.
