Alexandra Timber Tramway

Alexandra Timber Tramway

The Alexandra Timber Tramway is a steam railway and logging museum situated in the township of Alexandra in north-east Victoria. The main objectives of the ATT are to:
  • Recreate the bush sawmill and tramway era of the Rubicon Forest 1900-1950
  • Rescue and restore a wide range of small industrial locomotives and rolling stock
  • Operate a safe and viable tourist attraction for the benefit of Alexandra and district
The Alexandra Timber Tramway grew out of the Alexandra & District Historical Society and was incorporated as a not-for-profit association in December 1985. Our volunteers started with one operational locomotive, a short section of track, and the run-down station buildings at Alexandra. Since then, we have progressed to eight operational locomotives, one kilometre of track and a refurbished station building. Additional facilities include a locomotive depot, a carriage storage facility, a fully fitted-out mechanical workshop, and new toilet and picnic facilities.

While there is much to see at the Alexandra Timber Tramway for the railway enthusiast, the ATT is primarily aimed at families and tour groups wanting a fun day out for themselves and their children. Kids love to ride our trains, while adults will find much of interest in our three display rooms and our numerous outdoor exhibits.

Review:

The site has enough attractions to get the whole family entertained. The highlight for the kids will be a ride on the miniature train. There is a full sized train station and an oval shaped track around the front part of the property. There aren't any tunnels or extra diversions though.

There are three rooms with displays encompassing historical items and models which include an operational saw mill and settlement of a bush mill town.

Scattered about the site are a huge range of old trains, wagons, tractors and other historical equipment in varying states of distress.

There is a shelter with three tables and BBQs, unshaded tables and toilets.
