Carlton Gardens, Cnr Rathdowne Street and Carlton Street, Carlton

Very unusual Play Space with a series of walls different sized holes cut in them, two modernistic, stark metal towers with a big tunnel slide, smaller slides, musical instrument, monkey bars, fireman's pole, ladders and scrambling wall. There is a sandpit and musical bridge in this area. The surface has a range of textures including woodchips, gravel, sand and artificial surface.

Off to the side is a circular area with soft surface for young kids with a slide, cubby house, little swing and see-saw. Next to this is an area with monkey bars, flying fox and horizontal bars plus four swings.

Shaded and unshaded seats. Water tap. Grassy area with trees and big basketball court. The playground is located next to the Melbourne Museum. There is paid parking in the area and it can be difficult to find a place.

The design of this playground is not toddler friendly! The high walls placed horizontal to the play area, mean one minute you can be watching your child play in the caged cubby tower, (which is visually difficult to see through anyway), then if they go down the slide, there are three walls in the way, so you have to race to them before they climb through one of the holes in front, or take off to the other side of where you are! You can't see a small child over the wall, nor can they see you. The paths around the playground are also not pram friendly- not just the gravel area, but if you want cross through, your options are either through the sandpits or through the steep and confined rubber mountain terrain. Lots of school children do make it busy and chaotic, however those walls are the biggest concern when visiting and playing here. You're better off just going to the other side where the Exhibition Building is and looking at the garden, colourful foliage and admiring the building.

Great park but as it is near the Museum it can get over-crowded with school groups. You can get there by using the free city-circle tram then walking to the other side of the Museum. Carlton park also has a small duck pond and plenty of space to run around and picnic.
